Warren Feeney is relishing Saturday’s FA Cup test as his Wings side head to Weymouth in the third qualifying round. 

Welling United head into the game in good form against a Terras side who find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Vanarama National League South table, but Feeney is fully aware that the magic of the cup means that the form goes out of the window. 

“It’s a good, tough game for us,” he said. 

“I’ve watched them, they’ve looked a decent since the new manager has come in, I think they’re in a false position. They’ve got good players, they’ve got good energy and they’re mobile. 

“The new manager has got them working hard, they were unlucky the other night against Havant & Waterlooville, they started the game quick. 

“But we have to go down there with confidence. We’re in a good run and we’re enjoying our football at this moment in time. 

“We’ve just got to worry about ourselves but be prepared for what they’re going to fire at us and be confident in ourselves.”

“It’s a cup game and the FA Cup is a special tournament,” added Feeney. 

“We’re not going to go and win the tournament, but we want to go as far as we can go and we want that win to breed confidence.”

Feeney was part of the Cardiff City squad that reached the FA Cup final in 2008 and the competition still holds a special place in the Wings boss’ heart. 

And with a cup run meaning so much for clubs at non-League level, he knows just how important getting to the next stage can be. 

“Our target is to get to the next qualifying round, first and foremost,” he explained. 

“There are always upsets in the cup and, financially, a cup run can be fantastic for clubs. It will be tough, but we’re looking forward to the game.

“We want to go as far as we can go and I’m not one to disrespect the competition by resting players. It’s a major cup and when I got to the final with Cardiff City, it was unbelievable. 

“It’s always a great tournament, I played in it numerous times and I loved a cup day.”
