Warren Feeney says his players just need a bit of belief in the final third as Welling United look to get points on the board from Saturday’s trip to Concord Rangers. 

The Wings were forced to settle for a point from a goalless draw with Slough Town at Park View Road in midweek, despite dominating proceedings, and Feeney is looking for that little bit extra in the final third to ensure his side return from Essex with all three points. 

“We’ve lacked that bit of belief and creativity in the final third,” he explained. 

“I’m not too disappointed because we’ve tried to play the right way and get the ball down, we’ve just lacked that bit of quality in the final third. 

“We lacked the final ball on Tuesday night. The final pass disappointed me, so there’s a few things we’ve needed to work on ahead of Saturday.”

“The boys are in good spirits,” he continued. 

“We’re looking forward to what will be a tough game – Concord have new coaching staff in and had three very good wins, so we can’t underestimate them. They’re fighting for their lives and have momentum so we have to make sure we’re on top of our game.” 

Welling will be backed by a healthy band of travelling supporters at Thames Road thanks to the coach-load of fans from the Welling United Supporters’ Association, and Feeney praised the fanbase for their backing this season. 

“The fans have been brilliant,” he said. 

“All they want to see is people playing with passion and with work ethic. This is a transitional period for the club and it’s the first year of building so I’m adamant that we’re in a good position. 

“If you’d have been told we’d be in the top 10 for the first three months of the season, you would have snapped their hands off, so I think the fans appreciate that. 

“Yes, it was frustrating on Tuesday because we defended well but couldn’t put it in the net, but we have a chance to put that right on Saturday.”
