The Wings return to action on Tuesday evening as attention turns to the third round of the Isuzu FA Trophy with a trip to Aldershot Town (7.45pm).
After the last two league fixtures were postponed due to the recent cold snap, on top of the originally scheduled the cup tie on Saturday, the game provides a welcome return to football for Warren Feeney’s men who will be looking to book a place in the last 32 of the competition against the National League outfit.
The winners of Tuesday evening’s cup tie will host Leiston in the fourth round.
A former Football League side, the Shots spent five seasons in League Two before returning to non-League in 2013 where they have remained since (although they were only given a reprieve from relegation in 2019 due to Gateshead’s financial irregularities).
An indifferent start to the 2022/23 season saw boss Mark Molesley depart the club in October following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Chelmsford City, leaving Academy Manager Ross McNeilly in caretaker charge of first-team affairs and, with results picking up, on December 6th he was handed the job until the end of the season with a view to extend.
Aldershot come into the game off the back of two wins on the bounce against Southend United and Gateshead and they currently sit in 18th position in the Vanrama National League with eight wins, two draws and 11 defeats from their 21 games played, so far.
Warren Feeney: “There’s no pressure on us, it’s a free hit against a team in a higher division. The manager has done brilliantly and turned their form around – Aldershot have always been a good club with good history so it will be a tough game, but we go there with no pressure and we’ll enjoy it.”
Ross McNeilly: We want to have a go at it and all of our players want to do well in this competition, so we’ll be making sure we give it our all.”
