Wings boss Warren Feeney is keeping his players going during the big freeze.
Welling United will have gone two weeks without match action by the time they head to Chelmsford City on Saturday with the last two fixtures falling foul to the recent freezing temperatures.
But Feeney has been keeping the Wings squad on their toes and ensured that their Saturday was not wasted with a training session taking place over the weekend.
“It’s important to keep the players motivated,” he said.
“It’s obviously difficult for football clubs around this time of year with the weather and the pitches, but it gives us a bit more time on the training pitch to get things right.”
Feeney was in amongst it early on Saturday morning, arriving at Park View Road at 7am to help with the efforts to try and get the game against Hemel Hempstead Town on.
And although they were not able to beat the big freeze, the efforts from staff, fans and volunteers alike showed the spirit within the club.
“I was down there at 7am on Saturday morning,” he explained. “Cookie [General Manager, David Cooke] was there at 5am, and it was all hands to the pump with people trying to get the game on.
“It was frozen solid. I couldn’t believe how frosty it was across the whole of the pitch, but that one end in particular was unplayable. It’s frustrating, but it is what it is.
“We’re all together here and everyone works together,” continued Feeney.
“A lot of work goes on behind the scenes at football clubs that people may not realise. I’m not one of those who was brought up big time, so it was important for me to go down there early to show some support and help to try and get the game done.
“It’s important that everyone mucks in together. We’ve said it numerous times – Rome wasn’t built in a day. From where we were last year, a lot’s being done on and off the pitch, and it shows we’re going in the right direction when there are so many who are willing to help in situations like that.”
Welling United return to Park View Road for the Kent derby against Dartford on Saturday, February 4th (3pm).
