Welling United were made to settle for a point after conceding a penalty at the death at Cheshunt on Tuesday evening.
The Wings took the lead early in the second half thanks to a freak finish from Ade Azeez to bag his 15th goal of the season and it looked as if that would be enough to secure back-to-back away wins and all three points.
But a 94th-minute penalty would deny the visitors from crossing the finishing line and the evening was compounded even deeper in injury time when Stefan Payne was given his marching orders following a second yellow card.
The action was slow to get started on a freezing-cold night in Hertfordshire, with very little to report in the first half.
Payne’s skewed shot wide from the edge of the box was the closest either side came to an opening, while Alfie Cue headed wide for the hosts.
Azeez did see a shot skid inches past the post, but the linesman’s flag would have ruled it out, regardless.
The only other thing of note ahead of the second period was the fact that the Wings were forced into a change at the break with Jamie Sendles-White making way for Taylor Curran as Warren Feeney was made to shuffle his defensive pack.
The scrappy nature of the game was summed up by the opener which came the way of the visitors five minutes after the restart.
George Alexander played a decent ball through to Azeez who was beaten to it by the on-rushing Preston Edwards, and the Ambers’ goalkeeper smashed his clearance back off the striker before bouncing over the line and into the net.
With that, the home side went in search of a leveller, but for the second away game running, the Wings managed the game superbly for much of the remainder of the half, with Myles Roberts only being called into action in the 86th minute when he superbly tipped over Isaac Newton’s effort from 22 yards.
Before that, Welling did have a couple of half chances to double their advantage with Payne firing straight at Edwards, before sub Kyrell Lisbie also fired at the back-peddling keeper after bringing down the ball well with his chest.
And just when it looked as if the Wings’ efforts would yield a deserved three points, Payne was adjudged to have pushed an amber shirt in the box, four minutes into injury time, leading the referee to point to the spot.
Substitute Reece Beckles-Richards stepped up and did the honours, putting away his spot-kick to deal a sickening blow to Welling late on.
