Welling United host Charlton Athletic’s U21s in the second round of the London Senior Cup at Park View Road on Tuesday, with the match kicking off at the earlier time of 7pm.
The Wings are set to make the most of their squad with players who have been pushing for minutes likely to be given an opportunity against the young Addicks, while a number of Welling’s own youngsters may also be involved.
The first round of the competition saw the Wings secure the cup clash against their near-neighbours Charlton with a 1-0 victory at Cray Valley (PM) back in October, while the Addicks beat Phoenix Sport 6-0 in their round-one tie.
The winners of Tuesday’s clash will head to Barking in the quarter-finals.
THE OPPOSITION
Charlton’s U21s sit in sixth place in Professional Development League 2 – South with nine wins, six draws and nine defeats from their 24 games played, so far.
A team largely made up of U18s defeated Wigan Athletic at The Valley on Monday afternoon and so a stronger, more experienced, development squad is expected to take on the Wings on Tuesday evening, while first-team Manager Dean Holden has also hinted at some senior involvement, including January arrival Todd Kane, who is making his return from injury.
CUP HISTORY
The Wings have lifted the trophy on two separate occasions – the first in 1990 and the second in 2019 when they defeated Brentford B 1-0 to claim the silverware.
Charlton, meanwhile, entered the London Senior Cup for the first time last season, falling at the first hurdle with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Erith & Belvedere at Park View Road.
Tuesday will be the first meeting between the sides in the competition, although the two have met in the Kent Senior Cup in recent years – Welling coming out on top with an extraordinary 2-0 penalty shootout win in the semi-finals in March 2017, while the Addicks claimed a 1-0 victory to book a place in the quarter-finals the following season.
