Welling United began their pre-season campaign with defeat at the hands of Charlton Athletic in front of a bumper crowd of 2,765 at Park View Road on Saturday.
Danny Bloor’s first game in charge saw five Wings debuts with Crossley Lema, Will Wood, Mitchell Dickenson, Dominic Odusanya and James Vaughan pulling on a Welling shirt for the first time.
The Wings made the first attack of the afternoon, with Sadik Balarabe bursting forwards to force Ashley Maynard-Brewer into a save at his near post.
But it would not be long before the Addicks opened the scoring with 11 minutes gone – Scott Fraser crossing for Sam Lavelle to head home.
On 21 minutes, Balarabe came close again as he brought down a cross from the left, only to fire over the bar.
Charlton controlled large parts of the first half and doubled their lead through sub Karoy Anderson, who squeezed an effort inside the post 10 minutes before the break.
And on the stroke of half-time, Zach Mitchell added a third, slotting into the bottom left-hand corner.
There were wholesale changes at the break for both sides with a Wings contingent of trialists taking to the field and the Addicks would add a fourth 11 minutes after the restart when Charlie Kirk poked home.
Despite the result, it was a vital exercise for the Wings to get vital minutes into the legs and for Bloor to run his eye over the trialists on show.
Pre-season continues with a trip to Cray Wanderers next Saturday.
