Welling United bowed out of the London Senior Cup at the second round stage with defeat to Charlton Athletic’s U21s on Wednesday evening.

After a much-changed Wings side took a first-half lead through Josh Johnson, the Addicks’ youngsters left it late, netting twice in three minutes to claim a place in the quarter-finals.

Young Wings stopper Javarn Pitterson got his gloves warm early on when he made a smart stop from Toby Bower at his near post, before making a spectacular save shortly after to tip Kai Enslin’s stooping header over the bar.

At the other end Dominic Odusanya eyed up a long-ranger on the half-hour mark which was sent spinning wide via a deflection and, two minutes later, took the lead via Johnson’s first goal for the club since joining from Oxford United on loan.

Pouncing on some hesitant defending by the visitors, he raced through on goal to finish one-on-one to give his side the advantage going into the break.

The Wings continued to keep the Addicks at bay with Pitterson equal to some fairly tame shots from distance and he stood firm when Henry Rylah broke through one-on-one, denying the pacy winger.

But there was nothing he could do about the eventual equaliser. Prolific Charlton youngster Patrick Casey found the bottom left-hand corner with an unstoppable strike from distance with 11 minutes remaining and just three minutes elapsed before he struck again to turn the game around,  turning in a volley from close range.

Rod Stringer’s men will now turn their attention to Barnet in the last 16 of the FA Trophy on Saturday.
