Welling United earned a point on the road from a 1-1 draw at Hampton & Richmond Borough on Tuesday evening.

The visitors took the lead through Sonny Fish’s sixth goal for the club early on, but that strike was cancelled out by a leveller before the break as the two sides duked out to a stalemate, with the Wings arguably enjoying the better of things at the Beveree Stadium, wracking up 15 corners throughout the game.

The Wings made a bright start in south-west London and took a deserved lead with 11 minutes on the clock through the in-form Fish.

The Crawley Town loanee rounded up a slick counter-attack which saw Jason Adigun break forward before playing Fish through with a smart pass with the outside of his foot.

Fish remained patient to get into the box before plundering an excellent finish into the bottom left-hand corner.

Welling were certainly getting the better of their play-off hopeful opponents, but the Beavers found a way back into the game on 24 minutes when they levelled with their first real opportunity of the evening.

A smart through-ball was threaded through the visiting defence, allowing Jake Gray to finish low past Reice Charles-Cook.

Despite that setback, the Wings continued to finish the half strongly, threatening with a further effort from Fish, whose shot was deflected over, while Adigun and Reece Grant both tested the keeper before the half-time whistle.

Into the second half and the Beavers enjoyed a pair of half chances early on with Charles-Cook making a catch from Dominic Revean’s header, while Dean Inman headed into the side-netting.

But the Wings, once again, regained a better footing and, in truth, the half was played out on an even keel with both sides slugging out a midfield battle of attrition.

Adigun and Alex Gibson-Hammond exchanged shots from distance, but that’s all either side would give away as the game played out towards a share of the spoils.

With all said and done, it was another good point in the bank for Welling, who next face a trip to Chippenham Town on Saturday.
