Welling United played out a goalless stalemate at Havant & Waterlooville on Wednesday evening.

The draw is another useful point for the Wings, who secured a third clean sheet in four games, but delays any celebrations in terms of securing their safety for sixth-tier football next season, likely until the weekend.

However, the result condemned Havant to relegation, joining Dover Athletic as the second side to seal their fate.

There was little to report from a fairly lethargic first half with both sides struggling to get going on a wet and windy night in Hampshire.

Jason Adigun registered the first shot on goal of the evening after 17 minutes when his shot was sent skidding towards Hawks keeper Ross Worner who kept a hold of it.

On 24 minutes, a brilliant recovery tackle from Jonas Mukuna stopped Adigun, who had raced through on goal following an advantage played on the halfway line, and was just about to pull the trigger when the Havant man slid in.

At the other end, the closest the home side came in the first half was a good-looking curling effort from James Roberts which dipped just wide, while Riccardo Di Trolio slid in to make a goal-saving block from Mukuna.

Into the second half and it was the hosts who made the brighter start, hitting the crossbar from a deflected Roberts shot, before Joe McNerney saw a header hooked off the line by Jack Burchell moments later.

As the half wore on, the home side’s pressure eased. Welling’s best chance of the game came in the 65th minute when Cameron Green picked out a sumptuous pass forward to send Gene Kennedy clean through, but the Colchester United loanee could only force Worner into a smart save.

Di Trolio also came close for the Wings when the ball dropped kindly in the box following a corner, sending the ball just over the bar with an outstretched leg.

Come the final whistle, it was another point in the bag towards the Wings’ haul, but Rod Stringer’s men will now have to wait until Saturday to put a rubber stamp on their National League South survival as they host Weymouth in DA16.
