Welling United secured their Vanarama National League South safety with a point from a goalless draw with Weymouth at the J Hearnden Skip Hire Community Stadium.

While the game will not go down as a classic in terms of action, there were plenty of celebrations at the final whistle as the Wings faithful toasted their club’s great escape – from nine points adrift in the relegation zone in January to eight points clear of the dropzone in April, Rod Stringer and his squad can be proud of a remarkable achievement.

A goalless first half saw the two sides exchange half-chances, with neither being able to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

Antony Papadopoulos came closest when he sent a lob over the keeper, but he could only watch as it bounvced off the crossbar.

Meanwhile, Adam Roscrow turned well in the box before firing just wide of the left-hand upright while Jason Adigun fired straight at Terras stopper Harvey Wiles-Richards from a good position.

At the other end, Reice Charles-Cook was called into action to turn Harry Parsons’ deflected shot around the post and had to react quickly shortly after to keep out Tom Bearwish’s effort.

Stringer was struck two blows during the first half – losing Riccardo Di Trolio midway through the first 45, replaced by Joe Ellul, before being forced into another change on the stroke of half-time when Papadopoulos was forced off with a head injury, making way for Reece Grant.

Opportunities were few and far between in the second half, although Charles-Cook was forced to play hero six minutes after the restart when he managed to claw Dan Roberts’ looping volley out of the top left-hand corner.

From the resulting corner, there was somewhat of a left-off for Welling when the ball fell to the unmarked Corey Panter in a great position, but his volley was a poor one, struck straight at Charles-Cook.

Late on, David Amoo’s overhead kick dropped just over, but that would be as exciting as it would get in the second half, but it would matter not – the point, combined with results elsewhere, meant that the Wings had secured their National League South safety with a game to spare.
