The home side got off to a flyer, taking a surprise lead after just 45 seconds via a real bolt from the blue. A speculative effort from Hassan Ibrahiym from 35 yards arrowed straight into the top corner, leaving the Wings’ young stopper Javarn Pitterson rooted to the spot.
Welling looked an immediate response and did have the ball in the net through Anointed Chukwu, only to be denied by the offside flag.
Shortly after, the Wings hit the woodwork with Reece Grant nicking possession in the box before striking the outside of the left-hand post.
Just after the half-hour mark, the visitors came close again with Oscar Borg providing an excellent cross for Chukwu, who turned over the bar from six yards.
Despite Welling looking the more likely throughout the half, Cray came inches away from doubling their advantage on the stroke of half-time – Ibrahiym again proving dangerous when he cannoned an effort off the crossbar from the edge of the box.
In true pre-season friendly fashion, a number of changes for both sides made for a somewhat disjointed second half, which disrupted the flow of the game.
But the Wings would, eventually, find an equaliser with 73 minutes on the clock courtesy of one of those substitutes, Gene Kennedy.
A nice build-up resulted in Kennedy picking up possession in the box before remaining patient, shifting to his left and firing home his third goal of the summer.
Parity would only last for 10 minutes, however, with the home side regaining their lead to claim the winner with seven minutes remaining.
After a corner delivery had bounced around a crowded box, Welling failed to clear their lines, allowing Matthew Vigor to bury the winner.
Rod Stringer’s men will now turn their attention to their penultimate pre-season fixture as Ebbsfleet United head to Park View Road on Tuesday evening.
