Ahead of a weekend free of match action for Welling United, boss Rod Stringer has provided an update as he looks to shuffle his squad and strengthen his side.

After the disappointment of a heavy defeat at Boreham Wood last time out, Stringer has taken advantage of the two-week break to re-evaluate his options which has seen the departure of Reece Grant, Jack Munns, Jacob Mensah and Oscar Borg this week.

Meanwhile, he has moved quickly to fill the gaps with the arrival of defender Alex Lankshear on loan from Blackpool and former AFC Wimbledon left-back Paul Osew.

Speaking of his latest additions, Stringer said: “I’m really excited to bring in two left-sided players. We’ve brought in Alex Lankshear who is a left-sided centre-half and can also play at left full-back.

“We’ve also brought in an attacking left-back who get down the wing in Paul Osew who brings us versatility down the left-hand side.

“They’ll be good signings for us and will replace Jacob Mensah and Oscar Borg who have now left the club and we wish them both well.

“These are two players who will, hopefully, make us stronger and we hope to see them both in a Welling shirt for the first time next Wednesday night in the London Senior Cup away at Sporting Bengal United.”

The Wings Manager also explained his decision to make movements with his squad, while emphasising that he will be on the lookout to further improve his options.

“I’d like to wish Jack Munns and Reece Grant all the best as well,” he said.

“They were both with us last season, were a big part in us pulling off the great escape and have been valuable members of the squad.

“With the two-week break, I felt it was time for us to re-evaluate how we will be moving forward. It’s well documented that we’ve had a lot of injuries, but I felt the time was right to re-balance the squad. I felt we were overloaded with three similar midfielders and with Reece it was just a case of us freshening things up, so we’ll be looking for a centre-forward.

“It was the right time for us as a management team to move things about so we can, hopefully, get ourselves bedded in for when we return to the league programme on Saturday week against Weston-super-Mare.”

Stringer added: “I want to thank all the players who have left us for their services. As a manager, it’s never easy to release players as you become familiar with them and, on a personal note, they become friends, so it’s difficult when these conversations take place.

“However, we’ll always do what we feel is best for the team and the football club to try and help us climb up the table and put us in a position where we’re competing.”

The Wings return to league action when they host Weston-super-Mare at Park View Road on Saturday, October 5th.
