Ten-man Welling United made it two wins from two as they beat Enfield Town 1-0 at Park View Road on Tuesday evening.
Daniel Martin’s first-half freak goal from a corner which flew straight in proved to be the difference on an evening which saw Martell Taylor-Crossdale miss a penalty and Alex Lankshear sent off.
All in all, the Wings’ determination and effort saw them through to secure three deserved points.
The home side took control of the first half and enjoyed the first effort of the evening courtesy of Anointed Chukwu, who stung the palms of Rhys Forster, with the visiting stopper pushing it over the bar.
Shortly after, Elliot Long saw a decent shot well blocked in the box and the Wings took the lead from the resulting corner on 26 minutes.
Daniel Martin, potentially spotting a gap at the near post, drove his corner delivery low from the right with the ball making its way straight into the net to put the hosts deservedly in front.
It had been all Welling in the first 45 and they had the chance to double their advantage going into the break when they were awarded a penalty in injury time.
Alex Lankshear was felled in the box for what would be Welling’s first spot-kick of the season. Martell Taylor-Crossdale stepped up, but his standing foot gave way underneath him causing him to slip and scoop his shot off the right-hand upright.
The Wings maintained control after the break with Long coming close with a deflected effort wide from Kwaku Donkor’s cross, but their dominance would be compromised just prior to the hour mark when Lankshear was given his marching orders.
Having been booked minutes earlier for a foul, he was pulled up for what looked like a good, hard sliding tackle in front of the home dugout which the referee deemed a foul and a second-bookable offence, leaving the home side down to 10 men.
It then became a case of Welling having to professionally manage their lead and they did well to continue to keep Enfield at bay, limiting them in the final third until the 80th minute when Rhys Lovett got down brilliantly to keep out Sam Youngs’ glancing header.
In the dying minutes, the Wings had the chance to seal it when TJ Bramble broke forward, squaring for debutant Josh Redfearn in a great position in the box. But with the ball getting caught under his feet, his initial effort was saved, before his follow-up was cleared off the line.
At the other end, Lovett was only bothered once more by a free-kick from distance and the Wings continued to defend determinedly to earn their three points.
