The below article provides an update from the club’s Operational Board and was originally published in the matchday programme for the visit of Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday, November 26th.
Good evening and welcome to everyone connected with Tonbridge Angels. Our opponents have really kicked on since upgrading their facilities at Longmead Stadium and getting an all-weather pitch, which not only makes the club sustainable but also how they have boosted their supporter base as a result. This is a model that we want to replicate.
Unfortunately, our match last Tuesday against Weymouth was postponed. It was very frustrating as we believe the pitch was playable from the outset. Looking at the forecast later that day, it clearly showed the rain clearing and dry conditions. Common sense needs to prevail in these situations, as by 4pm the pitch was in a great state. We now must reschedule a game for later in the season from when this should have been played, valuable matchday revenue was lost and, as we start heading into winter period more and more games will be called off.
This was one that should not. Finances of football clubs become more challenging and this does not help.
On Saturday, we headed to Slough Town where they have an all-weather pitch. Despite the conditions we played brilliantly in the first half and to go in 2-0 up at half time was really pleasing. So in the second half to then go 3-0 up was great. However, we had a wobble and our opponents pulled the game back to 3-2, but somehow we dug in to win the game. Although Rod was unfortunately unwell and not able to be there, it was such a great result for Kev, Jim, the management and team. I am so pleased for the everyone involved as there is so much work going into this. The supporters really played their role in horrendous conditions, turning out in great numbers and getting behind the team from the get-go.
We should be finalising a friendly at home to Chatham Town for Friday, December 6th. This will give everyone the opportunity to get their football fix, with more details to follow.
As per previous board notes, if you have a junior football team or school that would like to attend a matchday as our guests, please email secretary@wellingunited.com
Let’s really get behind the lads and make some noise.
