Ten-man Welling United slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Truro City at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Wings went ahead through Zain Walker early one, but a pair of quickfire strikes from the turned the game around in the visitors’ favour before half time.

And when Dave Winfield was given his marching orders early after the restart, it became a big ask of the home side to get a footing back into the game.

A fairly even start to proceedings saw both sides come close with headers at each end – Winfield nodding past the post from a corner for the hosts, while Tyler Harvey headed narrowly wide from close range for the visitors.

On 23 minutes, the Wings were fired ahead in somewhat fortuitous circumstances. With the ball falling to Walker on the edge of the box, he unleashed a powerful first-timer which took a wicked deflection, wrong-footing ‘keeper Dan Lavercombe and spinning into the net.

Debutant goalkeeper Daniel Jinadu pulled off a good save to deny Billy Palfrey, but just after the half-hour mark, Truro levelled. A long throw into the box was flicked on and Jaze Kabia was on hand to finish from close range.

And it would not be long before the Tinners got their second to complete a turnaround.

After a ball was played into the box from the right-hand side, Tom Harrison rose highest to head Truro in front just six minutes after they had levelled.

Early in the second half, Welling would be further disadvantaged when Winfield, already on a yellow card, caught Kabia with a late challenge, leaving the referee no choice but to reach for a second yellow and dismiss the Wings’ skipper.

Just after the hour-mark, Kabia was involved again as he very nearly pulled off a spectacular strike from distance, looking to catch Jinadu off his line with a volley from 30 yards, only for it to bounce over.

Welling huffed and puffed with 10 man but just couldn’t muster up a chance to rescue a point as high-flying Truro claimed all three points.
