Welling United hit the road again as they make the 445-mile round trip to take on Torquay United at Plainmoor on Saturday (3pm).

The Wings will be hoping to build on the midweek victory over Weymouth as they look to keep their distance from the bottom four.

Rod Stringer’s men go into the game with a nine-point cushion from the dropzone, but will need to be at their best against the in-form table-toppers if they are to complete a league double against the hosts having already secured a 2-0 victory over them this season.

Welling will check on the fitness of Elliot Long, who is nearing a return from an ankle injury, while Harvey Walker is getting closer in his rehabilitation from a broken leg.

Rhys Lovett will remain unavailable between the sticks, while Theo Alexandrou is a doubt after limping off in midweek.

THE OPPOSITION

Paul Wotton’s Gulls have their eyes set on a return to the National League and currently sit top of the table with 13 wins, eight draws and three defeats under their belt.

They are unbeaten in their last 11 league outings, but suffered defeat last time out as they were knocked out of the FA Trophy at the hands of Worthing, who claimed a thumping 5-1 win.

Torquay will be without defender Jordan Thomas following his dismissal in the New Year’s day victory over Truro City, which was played in front of a bumper crowd of 5,135 at Plainmoor.

LAST TIME OUT

The Wings secured an excellent 2-0 victory over Torquay at Park View Road in the reverse fixture back in September.

Two late goals courtesy of Leyton Orient loanee Charlie Pegrum on his full debut and Gene Kennedy ensured a deserved three points for the Wings, who put in a well-organised and gritty performance to inflict only a second defeat of the season on their opponents.
