Welling United returned to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Weymouth at Park View Road on Tuesday evening.
Goals either side of the break courtesy of Riccardo Di Trolio and Zain Walker were enough for the Wings to claim their first three points of 2025 and make it an unhappy return to DA16 for former Welling boss Warren Feeney, despite a consolation strike in the 90th minute.
The Wings made a bright start on a bitterly-cold evening in DA16, taking a lead after eight minutes with their first foray forward.
A free-kick on the right-hand side was delivered perfectly for Di Trolio, who rose highest to power home his header to mark his return to Park View Road in style.
The hosts came close to a second when Chiori Johnson fizzed a shot inches past the post from just inside the post, while Dave Winfield’s goalbound header was well saved by Will Buse in the Terras’ goal.
At the other end, debutant keeper Dylan Berry was forced into a good save as he tipped over Keelan O’Connell’s well-struck effort from the edge of the box, while Jake McCarthy sent a shot bobbling just.
But it was the Wings who were looking more likely to extend their lead and probably should have gone into the break with a bigger cushion than just the solitary goal.
Theo Alexandrou curling effort was tipped over by Buse, while Winfiield’s header sparked a goalmouth scramble. Josh Redfearn, meanwhile, saw a shot well blocked from a good position.
The home side struggled to get going in the second half, although Weymouth were not able to offer anything in front of goal themselves before Welling extended their lead in the 68th minute.
Redfearn’s initial shot drew an excellent, point-blank save from Buse, but Walker was on hand to stick the follow-up into the bottom right-hand corner to double his side’s lead.
There was little more in the way of action as Welling eased towards the 90th minute, before a late Jordon Thompson strike in off the post made it 2-1 and gave the hosts something to think about for the six minutes of added time.
But the Wings held firm to claim a vital win to maintain a nine-point gap between themselves and the bottom.
Rod Stringer’s men will now prepare for the long trip to table-topping Torquay United on Saturday.
