Welling United slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Enfield Town at the Dave Bryant Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It was the home side who had the better of the first half, with their set-pieces proving to be a real thorn in the visitors’ side throughout.

On 10 minutes, Rhys Lovett clawed away a Sam Youngs header before it was played back to Hisham Kasimu who turned a header over from close range.

Another deep Enfield corner was nodded over on 24 minutes, before yet another troublesome set-piece very nearly resulted in an own-goal on the half-hour mark, with a goal-line clearance  sparing Dave Winfield’s blushes.

For Welling’s part, some pinball in the box saw Winfield eventually having a shot well blocked in the box, while Daniel Martin forced the keeper into a good save when he closed in on goal from the left.

But eight minutes before the break, the home side broke the deadlock – and it, unsurprisingly came from a set-piece.

A corner delivered from left fell to to Youngs who finished to make it 1-0 Enfield going into half-time.

The Wings made a brighter start to the second half as they looked to find a leveller. A penalty shout was turned down just before the hour mark when Dan Quick’s cross appeared to strike an Enfield arm, while Quick’s excellent, low cross shortly after just evaded a red shirt.

However, just as it seemed as if Welling were building up a head of steam, the hosts doubled their lead against the run of play.

It was an ex-Wings man who would do the damage as Anointed Chukwu got into the box to find the bottom left-hand corner.

Indeed, that goal knocked the stuffing of Welling, who struggled to muster anything in terms of a comeback as they limped towards the final whistle.

Welling will go again on Saturday as they return to Park View Road to host Dorking Wanderers.
