Welling United fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to top-of-the-table Dorking Wanderers at Park View Road on Saturday, despite a battling performance.

The visitors struck early on and it was enough to claim all three points from a closely-fought encoiunter.

The league-leaders struck early, taking a lead in the seventh minute with the first opportunity of the afternoon.

Josh Taylor received the ball in the box from the right and he proceeded to hold it up nicely before turning and finding the top right-hand corner.

The Wings responded positively with Harvey Walker, finally making his first start for the club having recovered from his broken leg, got on the end of James Alabi’s knockdown before seeing his shot saved by Wanderers stopper Harrison Foulkes at his near post, while Gene Kennedy’s piledriver of a volley came crashing back off the crossbar with 16 minutes on the clock.

And just before the break, Welling missed a gilt-edged chance to draw level. Great work down the left from Dan Martin eventually led to Kennedy’s shot being parried by Foulkes, but only as far as TJ Bramble in a great position in the box. But with the goal at his mercy, he could ony blaze over.

The hosts were still very much in it going into the second half, although chances came at a premium in the second half, with both sides cancelling each other out in the middle of the park.

Indeed, there would be no opportunities to report, and the Wings would have nothing to show for their effort on the day.

Rod Stringer’s men will now turn their attention to Tuesday night and a Kent Senior Cup semi-final clash with Dover Athletic.
