Welling United booked their place in the next qualifying round of the Emirates FA Cup in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 victory over Uxbridge at Honeycroft on Saturday afternoon.
After finding themselves a goal down just before half-time, the Wings rallied late on with Logan Dobbs levelling matters three minutes from time, before Greg Cundle netted a winner in the fifth minute of injury-time.
Uxbridge tested the visitors with some early pressure as Freddie Norman was called into action to keep out Harry Rush on two occasions, while John Ufuah being denied by the hosts’ goalkeeper Mark Scott from a corner at the other end.
On 33 minutes, Ufuah was denied again by Scott as he ran through on goal, but it would be the home side who would take the lead in the 42nd minute.
A fast counter-attack resulted in Liam Prior-Tack rounding it off with a well-struck effort form the edge of the box which nestled in the net.
Welling had to remain patient after the restart as they looked to regain a foothold on proceedings and it wasn’t until the 71st minute when an opportunity to do so arose, with Jack Leahy firing over from a good position on the edge of the box.
But the Wings continued to rally and got their breakthrough in the 87th minute when Gillingham loanee Dobbs was on hand to head home into the bottom corner. It was a goal which looked likely to seal a replay date with Uxbridge on Tuesday night, but Cundle had other ideas.
Just as he did at Chichester City seven days earlier, he was on hand to strike a late, great winner, firing past Scott in 95th minute to spark wild scenes of celebrations as Welling now look forward to the second round qualifying draw which is set to take place on Monday afternoon.
