A late Jack Paxman penalty ensured that Welling United will go again against Slough Town in a replay on Tuesday night as the sides played out a 1-1 draw in the Emirates FA Cup second qualifying round at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon.

The Wings put in a positive performance against the National League South outfit and could count themselves unlucky to go into the break a goal down.

Jack Paxman’s shot from distance was tipped away by the keeper early on, before the Rebels’ custodian was called into action again when he kept out Scott Simmons’ smart, back-heeled effort.

Welling came closer still when Ruben Shakpoke hit the post from a tight angle just before the half-hour mark, but it was Slough who would take the lead in the second minute of first-half injury time. A free-kick on the left-hand side of the box was deflected into the six-yard box where Peter Ojemen was on hand to divert it over the line.

The Wings continued to rally after the break as they looked to find a way back. Shakpoke came close again when he broke through one-on-one, only to be denied by the keeper, while John Ufuah was denied by a good pair of stops late on.

But just as it looked like Welling’s involvement in the FA Cup would be coming to an end for another year, they were handed a lifeline via the penalty spot in the third minute of injury time.

Leyton Orient loanee Zac Hambury, who was made a bright debut off the bench, was brought down in the box, leaving Paxman with the honours from 12 yards. Indeed, he made no mistake, putting away his spot-kick to earn a deserved draw and force a replay.

Lee Martin will  now prepare his side for a quick turnaround for the replay at Arbour Park in three days time.
