In 1989, Brampton Junior School in Bexley achieved national football glory, winning the prestigious Smiths U11 six-a-side championship. The team defied expectations and capped their run with a dream appearance at the original Wembley Stadium, where they were crowned national champions.

Behind that incredible story was Michael Burrell, the dedicated teacher who coached and guided the team through their historic run.

Fast forward to today — and the legacy continues. Michael is now a proud sponsor of Welling United striker Tom Leahy, the Wings’ number nine for the 2025/26 season.

Michael’s passion for youth football and community spirit remain just as strong today as they were 36 years ago.

“It was a special group of lads,” Michael explained during his recent visit to Park View Road.

“They played with heart and I’d love to reconnect with anyone involved in that team.”

This year marks 90 years since Brampton Junior School first opened its doors — and incredibly, also Michael 90th birthday. A shared milestone for a man and a school that both made history.

We’d love to hear from former pupils, staff, or families connected to that legendary 1989 Brampton squad.

Whether you played, taught, or supported — if you were part of that journey, get in touch with the club and we’ll help reconnect you with Michael directly.

A potential reunion is on the cards — and we’d love to help make it happen. Email: sales@wellingunited.com

Michael’s name will be announced at Park View Road every time Tom Leahy scores this season — a fitting tribute to a man who helped shape champions and still supports the next generation of footballers today.
