A second-half goal blitz secured Welling United a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Canvey Island at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless first half, the Wings sprung into life in the second period with Zac Hambury, Greg Cundle, Logan Dobbs and Jack Paxman’s penalty seeing the hosts race into a four-goal lead, before the away side netted a consolation in injury-time.
There was very little to separate the sides during the first half, with chances coming at a premium at either end, but it was the home side who came closest to breaking the deadlock.
Cundle’s firm header produced an excellent save from visiting stopper Lewis Greene, who tipped it over the bar, before the keeper was called into action to keep out Hambury at his near post.
Earlier in the half, a good opportunity fell to Cundle after he was teed up by Hambury in the box, but he could only fire straight at the goalkeeper.
Into the second half and the Wings would turn dominant, with the goals beginning to flow.
Hambury opened the floodgates when he netted his first goal in Welling colours on 50 minutes. After the ball was played across the box to the Leyton Orient loanee, he kept his cool and dinked a lovely finish past Greene for 1-0.

John Ufuah hit the post shortly after and it would prove to be a sign of things to come as the home side piled on the pressure.
Cundle doubled the scoring on 66 minutes when he took advantage of an open goal after Greene had come unstuck on the edge of the box and it would be three just three minutes later when Logan Dobbs headed home at the far post from a corner.
It got better for Welling when they were given the chance to add to their tally from the spot when the influential Hambury was tripped in the box – up stepped captain Paxman who made no mistake, stroking his spot-kick home for the fourth.
The only blemish came at the death when Max Fiddes tapped home a rebound for the visitors after an initial free-kick from the edge of the box was saved by Freddie Norman, denying the clean sheet their efforts deserved.
The victory sets the Wings up nicely for their next test against Ramsgate at Park View Road in three days’ time.
