Welling United will be hoping to continue their promising start to their Vanarama National League South campaign as they welcome Oxford City to Park View Road on Saturday. 

A busy Bank Holiday round of fixtures last weekend saw Warren Feeney’s men suffer a narrow defeat at the hands of Chelmsford City at home, despite a good performance in DA16 which warranted more, but bounced back with a 2-1 victory at Dulwich Hamlet two days later. 

And Feeney will be looking for his players to continue in the same vein, with Oxford coming to town in good form.

The Opposition

Oxford, managed by former Watford midfielder Ross Jenkins, arrive at Park View Road off the back of four wins on the bounce, keeping a clean sheet in each. 

Having lost at Eastbourne Borough on opening day, the Hoops have strung together an impressive set of results to leave themselves in fifth position with 12 points from their six games, so far – three places and two points better off than the Wings going into Saturday’s game.

Warren Feeney: “Oxford are a good side. I know Ross, he was a good player in his day and they’re a good footballing side – they’re there on merit and he wants to do it the right way. 

“But we need to focus on us. We have to worry about us first and foremost – every league game is tough and we need to make sure we’re prepared for it.”

Oxford boss Ross Jenkins: “I know the manager [Feeney] and they’ve re-structured their team and added new players and it’s going to be a really tough game on Saturday. 

“I played with him when I was on loan with Plymouth. He’s a hard worker and a real firm no-nonsense character so we’ll expect that from his team. They’re going to be hard working, aggressive, on the front foot.”

Stephen Parkinson takes charge of Saturday’s game in DA16. 

He has refereed five games, so far, this term, producing 13 yellow cards and is yet to reach for his top pocket for a red. 

Parkinson last officiated the Wings for the 2-1 victory at Hungerford Town in April. 

He will be assisted by Laurentin Hantea and Michael Hayden.
