Wings boss Warren Feeney says his players should be like a ‘pack of wolves’ following the recent postponements as he looks ahead to Saturday’s trip to Chelmsford City.
Welling United have seen their last two outings postponed due to the recent freezing temperatures but will be raring to go as they return to action at Melbourne Stadium this weekend.
Speaking to wellingunited.com, Feeney discussed a range of topics including Saturday’s opponents, having Stefan Payne back from suspension, the mood in the camp and extending Aaron Powell’s loan
On preparing for Chelmsford…
“You train all week to be a footballer on Saturday, so with the games called off recently, they should be like a pack of wolves out there come this Saturday.
“I know Chelmsford have played a couple of games, but we have to just concentrate on ourselves and make sure we take this good week of training into the game.”
The return of Stefan Payne…
“Payney is a big player for us. He’s a character and he has great attributes.
“He’s back available to us know, so we have to sit down with the coaching staff to decide how best to utilise our front line as we have some good options now with Dylan Gavin coming in.”
Saturday’s opponents: Chelmsford City…
“They’re lovely people – I met their owners at an Ebbsfleet game a couple of weeks ago. I know Robbie [Simpson], he’s a fantastic manager and he wants to do things right.
“We’ll respect them like we do with everyone – they’re a good side with good players and they are up there on merit so it will be a tough game for us, but it’s one that our boys will have to rise to, knowing that they’re going to a team at the top end of the table, and hopefully we’ll be in for a good game of football.”
The mood in the camp…
“They’re good boys. There’s going to be ups and downs all season and the way they’ve trained in the last 10 days has been great – they’ve been like kids in the playground like the old days, just enjoying it. They’re being competitive with each other and that’s all you ask for.
“They don’t go out there trying to lose games, but it’s just a lack of concentration sometimes that we need to nullify and, hopefully, we can put that right.
“You win a few games and you’re up to 10th, it’s a tight league.”
Aaron Powell extending his loan…
“Competition for places is what you need. Aaron has done very well and the challenge for him is finding the consistency, like any young player.
“Thank you to Peterborough, they’ve let him have us again. We lost Daniel Nkrumah in recent weeks, but you can see the reports of who is interested in him, so it shows that coming to Welling has done him the world of good because of the big hitters being linked with him.
“You never know who’s coming to watch us and it’s good that we’re getting kids in and getting them playing. That’s what we want to do to build for the future and it’s great that Aaron seems to be enjoying it here because he’s decided to stay.”
The Wings return to Park View Road on Saturday, February 4th to take on Dartford (3pm) in Vanarama National League South action.
