Welling United sealed all three points with a 1-0 victory over Bath City at Park View Road on Saturday afternoon.
Kodi Lyons-Foster’s late goal eight minutes from time was enough for Warren Feeney’s men to secure a deserved win to ease the pressure as the season enters its final furlong.
The Wings made a bright start to proceedings and were on top for much of the first half, testing the keeper early on through Ade Azeez who was slipped in on the right and drew a good stop from Max Harris at his near post, while Manny Parry saw a good-looking effort tipped over the bar.
On 19 minutes, the hosts came millimetres away from the opener when Christie Pattisson smashed a shot off the underside of the bar and down onto the line. The men in red looked over to the linesman, but any signal that it had, perhaps, crossed the line was not forthcoming.
At the other end, the Romans’ best chance of the half fell to Dan Greenslade, who saw the ball fall at his feet in a great position 10 yards from goal, but blazed well over.
The action was on somewhat more even keel after the restart with the two sides locked in a midfield battle, just waiting for that opening.
That opening very nearly came with 15 minutes remaining when Chi Ezennolim steered a cross from the left towards Azeez who made a dash to the near post, but could only divert just wide.
But with eight minutes left on the clock, Welling did make that breakthrough that they richly deserved.
Taylor Maloney’s corner caused chaos in the box and while an initial header was blocked, Lyons-Foster stooped to get his head on an all-important touch to see the ball bundled over the line sparking wild celebrations at the park end.
That goal would be all the Wings would need to seal all three points at home for the first time since New Year’s Day.
