Welling United shared a 1-1 draw with League One side Leyton Orient in a pre-season friendly at Park View Road on Tuesday evening.
The Wings registered the first shot of the evening with nine minutes on the clock when Reece Grant cut into the right-hand side of the box before seeing his effort well blocked.
At the other end, Welling debutant stopper Rhys Lovett got down well to keep out Charlie Pelgrum and he would be on hand to get behind another couple of good-looking efforts shortly after.
Anointed Chukwu came inches away from giving the hosts the lead after 22 minutes when he showed great patience in the box to hold the ball up before turning and poking a shot inches wide via a deflection, with Jack Burchell heading just wide from the resulting corner.
It would be the O’s who would take the lead, however, with Tom James pouncing to fire a shot across Lovett and into the bottom left-hand corner.
Welling made four changes at the break with Myles Judd, Zain Walker, Jack Munns and Martell Taylor-Crossdale all emerging from the bench, while the Wings also boasted a change of strip at the midway point, swapping their red for white for the second half!
With further changes to come throughout the rest of the second half, it proved to be somewhat of a non-event, although the various iterations of the Wings’ side continued to give a good account of themselves throughout.
Trialist B looked lively and came close to a leveller when his long-ranger was tipped over the bar, but the home side did eventually get the goal they deserved in the 90th minute and it all came through substitute Zain Walker’s own making.
The winger made a superb sliding challenge in the opposition box before getting to his feet and finding the bottom right-hand corner with a great strike.
It was another worthwhile pre-season run-out for the Wings and one in which they impressed. They now move on to a trip to Dover Athletic on Saturday as the summer programme continues.
