Welling United suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat at the hands of Boreham Wood at Meadow Park on Saturday.
Three goals in the first half made it an uphill struggle, before the Wings emerged with a bit more fight after the break.
But substitute Charlie Pegrum’s controversial second-half dismissal knocked the stuffing out of the visitors, before Boreham Wood added another three to put some gloss on their scoreline.
Welling were made to weather an early storm with the home side coming out of the blocks quickly with a host of chances in the early exchanges.
Tyrone Marsh dragged wide from close range after just 35 seconds, before Tom Whelan hit the post with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box.
Moments later, Cameron Coxe drew a good save from Rhys Lovett from close range, but it would not be long before Boreham Wood had their goal.
Twelve minutes were on the clock when a corner routine saw the ball played to the edge of the box where captain Jack Payne was on hand to smash home an unstoppable strike for 1-0.
The Wings were finding it hard to get a foothold on the game and Lovett was called into action again to keep out Marsh at his near post, before the hosts doubled their advantage from the penalty spot – Coxe was tripped in the box by Reece Grant, allowing Erico Sousa to stroke in his spot-kick, despite Lovett guessing the right way.
It went from bad to worse in the 37th minute with Boreham Wood adding a third. A ball from the right was struck first time by Junior Dixon from the edge of the box and it found itself in the back of the net via the right-hand upright.
Rod Stringer rang the changes before and after the break, bringing on the returning Maxwell Statham for his second Welling debut just after the half-hour mark, while Cameron Andrews, Elliot Long, Charlie Pegrum and Anointed Chukwu all emerge for the second half as the visitors tried to recover something from the game.
Indeed, Welling did appear somewhat more settled after the restart and registered their first shot of the afternoon on 57 minutes via Long’s effort from the edge of the box which sailed just over.
With 20 minutes left, Long was involved again as he slipped in fellow sub Chukwu, who slammed a shot wide.
But just as the away side were looking more spirited, they were hit with another blow as they were reduced to 10 men in questionable fashion.
Pegrum had been booked for an earlier foul and looked to have been fouled himself around 10 yards from the hosts’ penalty area. The referee, however, awarded a free-kick to Boreham Wood and showed a second yellow card for ‘simulation’, giving the Leyton Orient loanee his marching orders.
The dismissal compounded a forgettable afternoon for the Wings and they would concede a fourth late on when sub Gus Mafuta found the top right-hand corner from the edge of the box, before a fifth came along in the 86th when Dave Winfield’s header came back off his own post, leaving Kwesi Appaih with the simple task of tapping in.
Moments later, the hosts added a sixth with Abdul Abdulmalik rounding off a dismal day with an easy tap-in.
Welling now have some time to regroup with a match-free weekend coming up before they return to league action at home to West-super-Mare on October 5th.
