Welling United advanced into the third round of the London Senior Cup with a 3-0 victory over Sporting Bengal United at Mile End Stadium on Wednesday evening.

After a goalless first half, strikes from Martell Taylor-Crossdale, Cameron Andrews and Anointed Chukwu were enough to secure safe passage.

There was very little in the way of action for much of the first half, but both sides did see gilt-edged opportunities come and go.

First, Tanvir Ahmed fired well over from a good position inside the box with half an hour on the clock, before Taylor-Crossdale put one over the bar from eight yards out, suffering from the ball bobbling on the pitch just as he struck it.

And just before the break, Sporting Bengal pounced on some sloppy Welling play at the back with Daniel Pebble getting himself into a goalscoring position with the goal gaping to his left, only to skew his effort wide of the right-hand upright.

The second half continued in a similar vein to that of the first until Anointed Chukwu emerged from the bench just after the hour mark, with Welling finally making the breakthrough shortly after.

Chukwu was involved as the ball made its way to Taylor-Crossdale who finished expertly into the far corner.

Shortly after, the Wings doubled their lead through sub Andrews. The youngster was slipped in to round the keeper and finish coolly for his second senior goal for the club.

The home. Side had a chance to reduce the arrears from the penalty spot after foul in the box,  but Rhys Lovett made an. outstanding save from Joe Gregory’s penalty to maintain his clean sheet.

That all but secured it for Rod Stringer’s men, although there was still time for Elliot Long to hit the post before Chukwu bagged a deserved goal in injury-time to put a seal on victory.

Welling will now host either Met Police or Bromley in the third round of the competition.
