Welling United slipped to a 3-1 defeat to West-super-Mare at Park View Road on Saturday.
After taking an early lead courtesy of Anointed Chukwu, the hosts were pegged back by a pair of Weston strikes in quick succession before the break, turning the tide, before they added a third in a stop-start second period.
The Wings made the perfect start to proceedings, taking a lead after just two minutes with the first attack of the afternoon.
Elliot Long streamed forward before laying off Chukwu who made his was into the box, pulling the defence one way, then the other, before placing a brilliant finish into the bottom right-hand corner.
The home side were looking bright and were knocking the ball around beautifully at times in the first half, while Daniel Martin proved to be a real threat down the left. Indeed, the full-back came close when his deep cross nearly caught out keeper Max Harris, whoo scrambled to claw it over the bar.
However, in-form Weston, who came into the game off the back of a 10-game unbeaten run, reminded the hosts of their attacking threat when Reuben Reid hit the woodwork, helped on by Rhys Lovett’s save.
And before half-time, the away side turned the game on its head with two quick-fire goals in three minutes.
First, a free-kick delivery was met powerfully by the head of Reid for the leveller on 35 minutes, moments before a controversial penalty put the visitors ahead.
Initially, a free-kick on the edge of the box appeared to be given for a handball against Dave Winfield, before the officials seemingly changed their minds and pointed to the spot, leaving Luke Coulson with the job of stepping up and dispatching his spot-kick.
The second half proved to be a much cagier affair with little in the way of chances at either end until Weston added a a third with 19 minutes remaining.
A long ball over the top caught Welling napping, allowing Coulson to race through one-on-one and finish for his brace.
In truth, it was a hugely frustrating half full of stoppages which severely disrupted the flow of play. Indeed, the visitors second-half strike proved to be the only shot on goal of the second 45 for either side as the clock ticked down to defeat for the Wings.
Rod Stringer’s men will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday evening with a trip to Worthing.
