Welling United secured three big points against Bath City thanks to a dogged performance at Park View Road.
Josh Redfearn’s classy first-half finish proved to be the difference, while an excellent defensive display ensured a clean sheet.
A somewhat scrappy first half saw the hosts’ stopper Rhys Lovett come to the rescue early on to keep out Luke Russe, who looked certain to score from point-blank range with 10 minutes on the clock.
But with 19 gone, it was Welling who took the lead through the in-form Redfearn.
The striker latched on to a long ball over the top and kept his cool to calmly send a delicate lob over the advancing ‘keeper to keep his hot streak going. That strike would represent a fourth goal in five starts for the club.
The Wings were largely in control during the first 45, but Lovett had to remain alert between the sticks, making another excellent save just before the half-hour mark when he got down to his left to turn Jordan Alves’ low drive around the post.
And just before the break, the Romans came close again when a dangerous corner delivery caused problems, with an initial effort blocked at the near post before a follow-up was headed narrowly wide.
The second half proved to be a far more cagey affair with little to separate the sides.
Zain Walker’s shot from distance forced Harvey Wiles-Richards into a routine save, while Alves sent a decent looking effort just over the bar at the other end.
In truth, there was nothing more to come in terms of clear-cut chances with the Wings maintaining their lead brilliantly and defending astutely to fully earn their three points.
The victory leaves Rod Stringer’s men unbeaten in five league and cup games with a trip to Salisbury next on the agenda.
