Welling United suffered a 5-1 defeat to Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.
The away side started the stronger in Dorset and had the ball in the net after 16 minutes when James Alabi headed home, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag for offside.
Shortly after, Finn Ballard-McBride showed great feet to beat a number of blue shirts and dance his way into the box, before seeing his shot well blocked.
However, after showing all the early promise, Welling would find themselves behind with 20 minutes on the clock via a bolt from the blue.
The home side had yet to stage an attack int he final third when the ball fell to Brooklyn Genisini 25 yards from goal and he found the top right-hand corner to put his side ahead against the run of play.
With their tails up, the Terras nearly added a second moments later when Euan Pollock flicked a header from a free-kick delivery just wide, while Dave Winfield nearly staged an immediate response at the other end when his firm header was saved by Will Buse in the Weymouth goal.
But just as it looked like the Wings were finding their feet, the hosts stunned them with a second as Jake McCarthy squeezed a shot inside the right-hand upright.
The travelling Welling faithful could not be blamed for scratching their heads at the thought of being two goals behind based on the balance of play, but it would not be long before they were right back in it shortly after the half-hour mark.
A cross from the left was met by the head of Alabi, who guided the ball in off the underside of the crossbar to pull one back and reduce the arrears to a solitary goal going into the break.
It appeared as if Welling had put themselves in got stead heading into the second 45, but another goal from nowhere would set them back as visitors gifted their hosts a third before the hour.
A free-kick delivery from wide left should have provided a routine catch for Dylan Berry, but the Wings ‘keeper spilled the ball, allowing sub Josh McQuoid with the easy job of tapping in from a yard.
It went from bad to worse with 18 minutes remaining when Weymouth were given the chance to add a fourth from the spot when Riccard Di Trolio was adjudged to have fouled Pollock in the box, leaving McCarthy to step up and put away his penalty to secure a brace.
Welling had completely collapsed and the Terras weren’t finished, adding a fifth on 75 minutes courtesy of another Genesini stunner from distance.
The Wings will now have to lick their wounds and regroup ahead of the visit of St Albans City to Park View Road next Saturday.
