Welling United fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tonbridge Angels at the Halcyon Wealth Longmead Stadium on Tuesday evening.
A first-half penalty and a striker just before the hour mark where enough for the hosts to condemn the away side a loss, on a frustrating evening.
There was little to separate the sides during the first half, although Wings forward Scott Kashket came close to an opener after seven minutes when he scooped over after the goalkeeper had parried a low cross.
And Kashket came closer still three minutes later when his effort from the edge of the box looked too be heading for the top corner, only for Matt Rowley to pull a save right from the top drawer to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
Tonbridge threatened through Luca Botti, who skewed wide from a good position, before the hosts were given the opportunity to go ahead via the penalty spot after Riccardo Di Trolio had felled Ethan Sutcliffe in the box.
That left Liam Vincent to step up and duly stroke his penalty into the bottom left-hand corner to give the Angels a narrow advantage going into the break.
The hosts, however, began to take control after the restart as they looked to pull away.
Liam Vincent drew an excellent save from Rhys Lovett, who got down low to his left to deny what would have been an eye-catching solo goal, but it would not be long before they did add a second.
A free-kick delivery from the left made its way to an unmarked Botti at the back stick, who headed home to give Welling an even steeper hill to climb.
Rod Stringer rang the changes, making a quadruple sub with 20 minutes remaining, but the fresh legs failed to make an impact.
Sahid Kamara came closest with a free-kick which was fired narrowly wide, but there was little else to suggest the Wings would stage a comeback, leaving the Angels to ease towards the final whistle.
Welling will go again on Saturday as they host Slough Town at Park View Road, hoping for a vital three points.
