Welling United slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Farnborough at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium on Saturday.

Despite going ahead early on through Josh Redfearn, the hosts turned it around with a goal either side of half time as the Wings run without a league victory extended to nine games.

The visitors made a great start to proceedings in Hampshire, opening the scoring with their first foray forward after six minutes.

Some good work from Sahid Kamara, making his full league debut, set Welling on the attack, before Gene Kennedy teed up Redfearn who finished from close range for 1-0.

With 20 minutes gone, Welling came close to a second when the roles reversed, with Redfearn pulling the ball back to Kennedy in a good position, but he was denied by a good block.

The home sides’ long throws into the box were threatening to cause problems and it finally told five minutes before the break when they levelled.

The Wings failed to clear their lines when the ball was launched into the danger area and with it eventually falling to Matty Macarthur, he converted from six yards to make it one apiece heading into half time.

It remained an extremely tight affair after the restart with very few clear-cut chances for either side.

Kennedy came close with a well-struck effort from the  edge of the box which whistled just past the post on 53 minutes, but it was the hosts who took the lead for the first time with 18 minutes left on the clock.

Pavey’s piledriver from 22 yards was parried by Rhys Lovettt, who did well to get to his feet to keep out a follow-up from close range, but he could not prevent Jonathan Stuttle from bundling in at the third time of asking from a couple of yards out.

Welling saw plenty of the ball in the latter stages, but could not create anything meaningful as the final whistle signalled defeat on the road.

The Wings return to home turf as they host Hemel Hempstead Town at Park View Road on Tuesday evening.
